Splanchnic arterial dissections have been found more frequently with the increasing use of computed tomography(CT). However, the incidence of dissection, especially abdominal splanchnic arterial dissections, is not well known. The incidence of thoracic aortic dissection is relatively well known, with approximately 3-4 cases per 100,000 persons per year. This study aims to estimate the incidence of abdominal splanchnic arterial dissections in abdominal CT scans. To estimate the incidence of abdominal splanchnic arterial dissection, we reviewed radiologic reports of abdominal CT scans 14 years between Jan-01-2005 and Dec-31-2018, at Chungbuk National University Hospital. We found words like "dissection", ¡°celiac¡±, ¡°superior mesentric¡±, ¡°inferior iliac¡± or ¡°renal¡± in radiologic reports of 60,027 patients comprising 109,279 abdominal CT scans. We reviewed the CT images to determine the characteristics of abdominal splanchnic arterial dissections with reasons for CT scanning. We found abdominal splanchnic arterial dissections in 133 patients, with the incidence of 0.1217%. Regarding abdominal splanchnic arterial dissections, the superior mesenteric artery is the most frequent, followed by the celiac and renal arteries. Trauma is a rare etiology in superior mesenteric artery and account for approximately 50% in the renal artery. Asymptomatic dissections were similar to symptomatic dissections. Treatment and complications were rare.
